Reflection: I had a vision of what I wanted to do with the prezi, zoom into a Google earth image with a SketchUp drawing of Dibden Center. The Prezi would zoom around the facility listing and picturing the job positions for a visual organizational chart. But I realized that much of what I was trying to do is more disjointed than the subject matter really is. The Prezi is clever and keeps the audience stimulated to see the next visual gymnastics. But to me it is still very awkward for visualizing flow or process. Film, animation, machinima or video have a distinct advantage. I liked that I had to try and visualize this without words. I intend to pop photos into it with the actual spaces associated with the positions and job responsibilities. But getting the hang of the Prezi took me more time than I had anticipated. Working with it made me appreciate the virtual world I'd been working in to visualize more complex ideas.
This is a simulation I filmed in second life using the day cycle editor in the virtual world. The day light cycles through an entire day from daylight to darkness to moon light to dawn and daylight again. The simulation takes place on a simulator my partner and I designed and built. As a lighting designer I am interested in the effects of light on objects, and entire settings or environments. Time is often felt to speed up in virtual worlds. Certainly running the daylight cycle through the hours effects the sense of time you are experiencing, even sublimely.
Below is another machinima I made to apply for a fellowship at the HUB in Switzerland. We put this proposal together to present an idea of using cell phones to send data to interested parties as a way to make micro payments to the poor and protect the environment at the same time. This is a somewhat complicated idea and even harder to simulate. There was certainly places to do much better. The process of trying to find ways of actualizing ideas in an imaginative way is challenging. Personally I am not the most lyrical speaker, but a medium such as machinima is very powerful.
If you think about it, a Prezi is just another way of turning the page. The step into an animated and inhabited virtual landscape, interacting with avatars, provides a place where we can imagine different things.
