The Diary of Anne Frank at Dibden Center for the Arts, Fall 1992 Directed by Professor Russel Longtin, Lighting and Set design by Jan Herder. These 3 designs: the Crucible, Anne Frank and Picasso a the Lapin Agile on the next page represent 3 decades of creating environments for theatrical productions at Dibden Center for the Arts.
The Anne Frank design concept extended the stage into the dark city
and with the header into the audience: intimate and foreboding, claustrophobic and expansive. The warm and precious light, Anne's spirit, thinly veiled by cedar and shingles.
The Crucible, 1989, Directed by Herb Propper, Lighting and Set Design by Jan Herder
My first design at Dibden Center for the Arts
My vision was a stark, black and white, either/or environment for the drama. Towering monolithic columns, stelae like, observed the proceedings. A peering head and eyes watched, cold and blue or thirsty for blood. The geometric, black and white theme, silhouetted crosses and the jail like braces of the scaffolding when it was back lite confined the actors.
