Welcome to my Portfolio!

This is a site to showcase the work I am involved with and some of the past projects that I have done.
Currently I am the Director of Dibden Center for the Arts, at Johnson State College.  I have been teaching technical theater there since 1988.  In 2001 I created the Associate of Arts in Technical Theater Degree, where I explore new models of teaching and learning in a student centric learning community.  I facilitate classes in Stagecraft, Lighting and Scenic Design and Theater Lab.  Dibden Center for the Arts is operated as a performing arts center 100% by students.
In 2007, I discovered web 2.0 and Second Life.  And in 2009 I completed my Certificate in Virtual Worlds from the University of Washington.  The exciting pace of change and the huge shifts in learning occurring through the use of technology have had a profound affect on my own teaching and learning. In the summer of 2012, I decided to enter the Master of Arts Degree in Education Program, under a unique Individualized track, at Johnson State College, to explore these changes and deepen my expertise.

My reflections for the Master Degree classes here

I am still thinking about various ideas for my thesis and focus, but it will be around the idea and practice of 3D Design Based Learning in a connectivist blended and hybrid environment.  I'm curating a scoopt.it--
http://www.scoop.it/t/3d-designlearning to explore emerging content in this area.
Please check out my chapter entry to the recently published online book: Classroom 2: Flipping the Facility
http://www.scribd.com/doc/100899634/Jan-Herder-Flipping-the-Facility
This chapter shares the process I use in my teaching at Dibden Center for the Arts, where the facility is the classroom.  The students have 100% ownership of the daily operation, design of productions and management of the performing arts center.
